Washing Cloth Diapers
A simple, steady routine keeps cloth diapers fresh, absorbent and long-lasting. Here is everything you need for washing at home, by machine or by hand.

The everyday routine
- Rinse: remove solids into the toilet and rinse the diaper and insert in cold water.
- Store: squeeze out excess water and keep used diapers in an open, airy bucket or wet bag.
- Wash: every 1–2 days, with a mild detergent.
- Dry: line-dry until completely dry before reuse.
Machine washing
- Run a short rinse or pre-wash first.
- Then a full wash cycle with a mild detergent, at the temperature the care label allows.
- Fill the drum loosely, about two-thirds full, so the diapers can move.
- Add an extra rinse if your detergent leaves residue.
Hand washing
- Soak briefly in water with a little mild detergent.
- Scrub gently, especially the inside of the insert.
- Rinse two or three times until the water runs clear.
- Squeeze gently. Do not wring hard, as that strains the elastics.
Drying
Line-dry diapers and inserts. Gentle morning sun or shade is kindest to waterproof shells and elastics, and inserts can take more sun. In the monsoon, dry indoors near a fan, separate shells from inserts, and use a final spin to shorten drying time.
What to avoid
| Avoid | Why |
|---|---|
| Fabric softener | Coats fibres and reduces absorbency |
| Bleach and harsh chemicals | Can damage fabric and the waterproof layer |
| Too much detergent | Leaves residue that causes smells |
| Very high heat | Can weaken elastics and waterproof layers |
Tip: If diapers smell after washing, try an extra rinse and a little less detergent, and check you are not overloading the machine.
